Listening Without Losing Authority

First understand, then protect, and finally set boundaries and consequences.

Connect → Understand → Protect → Set boundaries → Follow up

The CALM method (RUHIG)

RRuhe bewahren: Bevor du beginnst: kurz durchatmen, eigenes Handy weglegen, nicht im größten Ärger starten, wenn möglich einen ruhigen Ort wählen und genügend Zeit einplanen.

UUnvoreingenommen zuhören: Nicht sofort bewerten. Nicht unterbrechen. Keine schnellen Schuldzuweisungen. Keine voreiligen Strafen ankündigen.

HHerausfinden, was passiert ist: Nutze offene Fragen statt Verhör.

IIm nächsten Schritt gemeinsam handeln: Sicherheit prüfen, Beweise sichern, blockieren und melden, Konten schützen, Schule oder Plattform einbeziehen, professionelle Hilfe holen — wenn nötig.

GGespräch später wieder aufnehmen: Ein Gespräch löst nicht immer alles. Vereinbart, wann ihr wieder sprecht, was bis dahin passiert, wer was übernimmt und woran ihr erkennt, ob weitere Hilfe nötig ist.

Key points

Listening doesn't mean there are no rules or consequences. The right order is: first understand, then protect, and finally discuss boundaries and consequences.

A good opening

I won't pretend nothing happened. But I want to understand first before we decide what to do next.

Key points

  • Good authority: clear, calm, predictable, respectful, consistent.
  • Weakening authority: yelling, threats, public shaming, changing rules, unpredictable punishments, broken promises.
