Screen Time Without Power Struggles

Shared, realistic rules instead of daily conflicts.

Connect → Understand → Protect → Set boundaries → Follow up

The CALM method (RUHIG)

Keine schnellen Schuldzuweisungen. Keine voreiligen Strafen ankündigen.

HHerausfinden, was passiert ist: Nutze offene Fragen statt Verhör.

IIm nächsten Schritt gemeinsam handeln: Sicherheit prüfen, Beweise sichern, blockieren und melden, Konten schützen, Schule oder Plattform einbeziehen, professionelle Hilfe holen — wenn nötig.

GGespräch später wieder aufnehmen: Ein Gespräch löst nicht immer alles. Vereinbart, wann ihr wieder sprecht, was bis dahin passiert, wer was übernimmt und woran ihr erkennt, ob weitere Hilfe nötig ist.

Goal of the conversation

Create shared, realistic rules instead of daily conflicts.

A good opening

"I don't want to argue about your phone every evening. Let's work together on a plan that includes sleep, school, friends, and your online time."

Helpful questions

  • What is especially important to you online?
  • When do you find it hard to stop?
  • What times should be phone-free for everyone?
  • What rule should also apply to adults?
  • What would be a fair exception?

Key points

  • Look beyond just the minutes.
  • Talk about: What is the child doing? When? What gets pushed aside? How do they feel afterwards? Can they stop?

What to avoid

  • shutting down right in the middle of a game
  • only having one-sided rules
  • adults without their own boundaries
  • constant last-minute exceptions
