WhatsApp

Current

Messaging · about 12 minutes

The most used messenger in many families — sharing profiles, groups, calls, and locations should be set up and discussed thoughtfully.

For: Families with smartphone-using children and teensLast reviewed: 2026-07-14

What the platform is

Main Purpose
Quick messages, voice messages, calls, and group chats with people you know.
Common Family Usage
Often the main app for family coordination and friend groups. Parents can read messages if the child agrees — there is no built-in parental control.
Ways to Communicate
Text, voice messages, phone/video calls, status updates, groups, media.
Public
Your profile picture, info, and 'last seen' can be visible to contacts or no one at all — depending on your settings.
Contact from Strangers
Unknown numbers can send messages and call unless they are blocked or restricted.
Purchases and Subscriptions
No traditional in-app purchases; there may be WhatsApp Business or payment features depending on your region — discuss with your child.
Official Age Rating
13 years old (or the local minimum age according to WhatsApp)
Nova Uni Orientation
Check profiles, last-seen status, groups, and unknown calls together. Share live location and disappearing messages only with clear agreement.

Country Guidelines: In the EU, there are youth protection and data privacy rules in addition to the app settings.

What makes the platform appealing?

  • All your friends are probably already there
  • Quick groups for class, clubs, and family
  • Voice messages instead of typing
  • Easily share status updates and media
  • Free over the internet instead of SMS

Important Family Risks

Unknown Numbers

Strangers can message, send voice notes, or call — often without any prior contact.

Groups Without Oversight

In large groups, there can be pressure, forwards, and content that the child didn't want.

Chains and Fake News

Forwarded content can seem urgent and personal — without checking the source.

Live Location

Live location shows movement in real-time — only share with trusted people and set a time limit.

Disappearing Messages

They can make conversations hard to follow and create a false sense of security.

Account Takeover

Without two-step verification, the number is more vulnerable to SIM swaps or takeover attempts.

Quick Safety Check

Is your profile picture and info visible only to people you want?
Have you set your 'Last Seen' and online status intentionally?
Have you discussed read receipts (on/off)?
Who can add you to groups? Have you checked unknown groups?
Are calls from unknown numbers restricted or blocked?
Is your live location shared only with agreement and a time limit?
Are disappearing messages activated only when you want them to be?
Is two-step verification turned on?
Have you tried blocking and reporting together?
Have you discussed chat backup and device access (who knows the PIN)?
Have you checked automatic saving of photos/videos in your gallery?

Privacy and Profile

Messages and Contacts

Location and Visibility

Location is shared only intentionally, for a limited time, and with people you know.

Content and Recommendations

Filters and supervised accounts can limit content, but they can't guarantee that every inappropriate video or contact will be blocked.

Purchases and Subscriptions

Family and Supervision Features

Family features support conversations and boundaries. They don't replace trust, education, or regular check-ins.

Block and Report

When to block?

  • Open chat → Tap on contact name → Block (names may vary).
  • In Settings → Privacy, you can manage blocked contacts.
  • You can often limit calls from unknown numbers — check in settings.
  • After blocking, talk briefly: What happened, do you need more help?
  • For groups: Leave the group and consider talking to the person who added you or block them.

When and how to report?

  • Open chat → Contact/Group → Report (often possible to block at the same time).
  • Report suspicious messages and spam as well.
  • Use official WhatsApp help if an account seems to be hacked.
  • In case of harassment or illegal content: save evidence (screenshots) and consider seeking advice/police help.
  • Use links to help and youth protection under 'Official Sources' and Nova help pages.

Conversation Starters

  • Which groups are important — and which ones cause stress?
  • What do you do if an unknown number texts or calls you?
  • When is sharing your live location a good idea — and when is it uncomfortable?
  • How quickly do you expect replies from me / from your friends?
  • What would you do if something embarrassing gets shared in a group?
  • Who do you turn to if you're feeling unsure — without worrying about losing your phone?
